Jean-Paul Gaultier a Haute couture fashion designer has amassed a great fortune and success through, well…. let’s just say, designing bizarre fashions and taking enormous risks with models, hair and makeup. In fact, he is so progressive his French peers have named him “l’enfant terrible” (terrible child) because he is always rebelling against the fashion establishment and being provocative with his creations. Remember Madonna’s cone bra in the 90’s? Well he designed it. All those teenage girls across America weren’t really cold they were just “vogueing” it on the dance floors. On the Paris cat walk in 2011, Gaultier sent young gorgeous models strutting their clicking heels down the runway wearing beautiful classic pants, skirts and silk tops. Sounds like a typical runway show with one exception. The models had gray bee hive wigs donned upon their pretty little heads. Yes, GRAY hair ladies and gentlemen. This wasn’t anything new. Gaultier had used mature models before in 2009 but celebrities and famous people alike somehow where inspired by and embraced those fluffy gray coifs. Maybe it was just another clever gimmick or another way to irritate his colleagues, but Gaultier started the “silver hair movement” that day. Later on, the tabloids such as the National Enquirer, Daily Mail would dub it “granny hair” fueling the fire even more.
The silver hair trend gained such popularity in America, France and the UK it morphed into a lifestyle. Take a gaze on Youtube, Instagram, Pinterest and you will see women ages 50, 60 and 70 proudly taking selfies on Instagram and modeling natural gray hair. Is it a trend? Is it a rebellion? Or are women just simply becoming more accepting of what inevitably they cannot change? Whatever it may be, women are letting the beauty and fashion industry that they are not washed-up old hags. . After Gaultier’s fashion show in 2011, singer Ellie Goulding was photographed at the music awards with a very noticeable silver hue to her blonde hair. Not many noticed as she had always been original and sometimes tacky with the hair colors and clothing styles. It’s only when Kelly Osbourne, daughter of rocker Ozzy Osbourne, who dyed her hair lavender gray in 2012, is when everyone went bonkers. Kelly was on the receiving end of a lot of snarky, hurtful comments and the tabloids had a field day with her. The outrage to “age” herself on purpose like that with “granny hair!” When Lady Gaga, Pink, Rihanna and Nicole Richie soon followed suit the rest is well, Instagram history. Shove it tabloids.
Since the inception of Youtube, Instagram, Pinterest and other social media platforms, an entire Silver Fox nation has emerged. Women of all ages are accepting natural beauty. These women are utilizing social media platforms reinventing themselves and paving the way for the next generation. Actor Jamie Lee Curtis is a great example of a “Silver Fox.” She accepts and promotes her natural look. She doesn’t have a desire to look younger and recently at the 2019 Golden Globes Award debuted wearing a white dress to enhance her silver platinum hair. Social media bowed to the ice queen!
The Sliver Fox influence hasn’t just stopped in Hollywood. It is changing the billion-dollar shampoo biz. High-end professional shampoo companies such as Redken, Joico and Matrix are now taking a slice of the silver pie. According to lookfantstic.com the average woman will spend $55,000 in a lifetime on hair products and treatments. That is quite a large investment. Take one look at the shampoo section at Target stores and there is an entire isle of colorful bottles and displays of hair products all vying for attention and loyal customers. Suddenly, after rotting on the shelves with no one knowing how to use it, purple shampoo was simply an empty space on the shelf. Not until younger women (copying their mature influencers) colored their hair “ashy” and “silver” tones did more affordable brands take notice. L’Oreal, Clairol and a few other drugstore brands followed along and now are taking it to another level by marketing purple shampoo to brunettes and men. Redken has stepped up its game and has repackaged it as well. In the sea of neon green and orange squeezy tubes sits an oh so subtle, classy, soft and sparkled silver bottle of Redken “Color Extend Graydiant” shampoo. Clever little devils those Redken people.
What is exactly is a “granny” anyway? According to Dictionary.com it is an informal word for grandmother, an elderly person. Is she sitting in a chair knitting away planning her funeral? Does she have walker with a Life Alert necklace on? When the tabloids dubbed Kelly Osbourne’s lavender gray hair “granny hair” they did what they do best. Insulted and criticized a famous woman who has a strong sense of who she is and a unique style. Just to sell magazines. What they didn’t bargain for was mature women got really pissed off and propelled “granny hair” into a full-blown rebellion. Successful, intelligent women of all ages took a trend and made it into a lifestyle of no longer dying their hair.
Silver Fox embodies feeling younger, stronger, healthier and is changing minds daily. As Jamie Lee Curtis quoted on sixtyandme.com:
“If I can challenge old ideas about aging, I will feel more invigorated. I want to represent this new way. I want to be a new version of the 70-year old woman. Vital, strong, very physical, very agile.”
